What this tracks
- Ballots cast before Election Day (mail/absentee ballots returned, and early in-person votes where the state reports them) for the Nov 3, 2026 general election in 18 states.
- Same days out: every comparison lines up 2026 with 2018 (Nov 6), 2022 (Nov 8) and 2024 (Nov 5) at the same number of days before Election Day. Where a past cycle has no figure for that exact day, the nearest day is used and marked (lighter bar, asterisk or note).
- Party split means the registered party of voters who have already cast ballots, from state voter records. It is not a count of votes for candidates. States without party registration (GA, MI, MN, TX, VA, WI) show no party split. Ohio also has no party registration; its page shows the party of the last primary each voter took part in, labeled as such, and it is kept out of the overview's party comparison. In Nebraska the Senate race has an independent candidate (Dan Osborn), so party splits there don't map onto that race.
- Race and age are shown wherever the state collects them (North Carolina's file; Georgia via georgiavotes.com, marked secondary).
- Data as of: the bar at the top of each page shows the date (and time, when the source carries one) of that state's latest data. It is written into each data file by the daily build. Below it, "State last posted" gives the date (and time) the state or source posted the file, taken from the file itself (compile time, file date, dataset update time), with the last day of ballots it covers. If the source publishes no post date, only the data date is shown. "Checked" times are when this tracker downloaded the data, not when the state posted it.
- Amber warning: counts business days only, so weekends don't count against a state. A state that normally posts every 1–3 days is flagged once its newest file is 2 or more business days old (a Friday file is not flagged on Saturday, Sunday or Monday). States that post less often (Maine, Minnesota) are flagged after their usual gap in business days. Georgia's official file is also flagged whenever a newer secondary total exists. Federal holidays are not excluded.
- Numbers are not a forecast. Early ballots lean toward whichever party's voters prefer voting early, and that varies by state and year. Polls are not used anywhere on this site.
Labels
- † Secondary source: a number compiled by a tracker, journalist, university or nonprofit from official data, used when the state doesn't post the file publicly or blocks automated downloads. Each one is named on the chart and in the state's source list, and spot checks against official figures are noted where they exist.
- Modeled or proxy figures are labeled as such: anything this tracker estimates instead of counting directly (Virginia's locality-lean groups and lean estimate; Ohio's party by last primary voted) is named a proxy or model estimate on the chart itself, kept separate from official counts, and never called registered party.
- Rounded or approximate figures (for example "287k" as posted, or approximate dates) are drawn as hollow dots or marked approximate.
- Every number traces to a source listed on its state page and to a row in that state's CSV data file (for example data.csv for Florida, nc-data.csv for North Carolina).
Sources by state
† = secondary source. Laws that change comparisons are listed on each state page.
| State | Official sources | Secondary sources (†) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| AZ Arizona | Maricopa County open data (2026 Maricopa mail returns) | † 2018: Arizona SOS daily update, as posted by Garrett Archer † 2022/2024: Sam Almy's daily tracker built from county return files (Arizona Democratic Party), rounded † 2026: Stealth Analytics totals of county daily files (some county files 1–8 days old); 2026 party split from Stealth Analytics posts on X | No official statewide daily report exists, so every statewide Arizona series is secondary. |
| CO Colorado | Colorado SOS daily ballot-return workbooks (2022, 2024) | † 2026: civicAPI until the SOS daily workbooks for 2026 are posted | Past official workbooks start 15 (2022) and 14 (2024) days out. No 2018 series. |
| FL Florida | Florida Division of Elections daily vote-by-mail and early-vote files and public portal (2026); final archive reports (past cycles) | † Past-cycle day-by-day points: dated news reports quoting DOS data (News Service of Florida, Florida Politics, Pensacola News Journal) | Reports are cumulative through the prior day. |
| GA Georgia | Georgia SOS statewide absentee voter file, every cycle (2026 file loaded by hand, so it can lag) | † 2026 race and age: georgiavotes.com † Latest total when newer than the official file: georgiavotes.com, which rebuilds its totals from each new SOS file (matched the official file within a few ballots on Oct 15) | No party registration. When georgiavotes.com has data for a later day than the official file loaded here, its total is shown separately as "latest (secondary)": a callout and grey diamond on the Georgia page and an italic row on the overview, compared with the official past files at the same days out. Its data-through day is set by matching its own "same point in 2022" figure to the official 2022 series. It is never added to the official lines, the overview bars or the combined totals, and it disappears once a newer official file is loaded. |
| IA Iowa | Iowa SOS daily absentee reports and final county reports | None | Iowa cut early voting from 29 to 20 days in 2021. |
| KS Kansas | Kansas SOS advance-voting dashboard and press releases | † Daily statewide tables compiled from SOS reports by IKE Lab, Wichita State University (spot-checked against the SOS) | 2018 has only a 4-days-out point. |
| ME Maine | Maine SOS statewide absentee voter data files (2026; past cycles rebuilt day by day from final files) | None | Maine posts a new file every few days. |
| MI Michigan | Michigan Dept. of State voter participation dashboard; 2022 SOS press releases | None | No party registration. |
| MN Minnesota | 2024: MN SOS press release | † 2026: civicAPI (from MN SOS weekly absentee data; the SOS site blocks automated downloads) † 2022: SOS via Internet Archive, KSTP, Star Tribune † 2018: MinnPost chart (approximate dates) | Weekly data, matched to the nearest past day. No party registration. |
| NC North Carolina | NC State Board of Elections statewide absentee/one-stop files, every cycle, plus voter registration and history files | None | Race and age are self-reported on registration. |
| NE Nebraska | Nebraska SOS press releases with statewide early-ballot counts (2022, 2024), official canvass books (final early votes 2018/2022/2024) and voter registration statistics (Oct 1, 2026) | † 2026 daily, statewide and by county: civicAPI † 2022 same-day and NE-2 district figures: charts posted by @ne2earlyvote from the state files (copied by hand; also used to cross-check civicAPI), and their Nebraska tracker, built from the official SOS early-voting lists (2020–2024 finals, 2026 daily files; source of the ballots-sent figures) † 2018 requests and Douglas/Lancaster county checkpoints: dated news reports (AP, KETV, WOWT, KOLN) | The SOS sells its early-voting file and posts no daily figures. NE-2 shown as a district view; Osborn (independent) means party splits don't map onto the Senate race. No race data (not collected). |
| NV Nevada | Nevada SOS VIVID tracker (statewide mail returned and in-person early votes by county; in-person party shares). The tracker has no download, so these values are typed from the screen each update Clark County Election Department mail-ballot files (2022/2024/2026) and daily in-person early-voting files (2024/2026), with party matched from the county voter list (voter-level; only aggregate counts are published) Washoe County Registrar of Voters mail-ballot and in-person turnout files (voter-level; only aggregate counts are published) Nevada SOS 2024 General Election Early Voting Turnout, Week 1 report (daily in-person votes by county and party) | † 2018/2022/2024 statewide party leads: figures as stated by Jon Ralston (The Nevada Independent) † 2026 statewide via civicAPI: superseded, kept in nv-data.csv only | Party splits come from Clark + Washoe (about 88% of voters). The SOS tracker lists statewide party only for in-person votes, so there is no official statewide party lead. Washoe's own file can lag the SOS tracker for in-person votes (Oct 18: 4,747 vs 5,746). The overview compares Clark County only (mail + in person) with 2024. |
| OH Ohio | Ohio SOS public absentee export (voter-level; only aggregate counts are used, no voter records are published) Ohio SOS press releases and dashboard (statewide) Cuyahoga, Franklin and Butler county board files (partial, about 1 in 4 registered voters) | † Past-cycle statewide points quoted in dated news reports (WOSU, Signal Ohio, Ohio Capital Journal and others) † 2026 rounded party figures through Oct 12: Ohio Capital Journal (cross-check only) | No party registration: "party" = the party ballot a voter last chose in a partisan primary; unaffiliated = none. From the SOS export: ballots returned = a valid return date on or before the day before the report (the report day is partial; impossible dates are dropped). In person vs mail is derived (a ballot issued and returned the same day counts as in person); mail requests are derived (all records except in-person ballots). The export is current-cycle only, so the party split has no past-cycle comparison. A 2024 news figure "as of Friday morning" (Oct 18) is dated Oct 17, the last full day it covers. |
| OR Oregon | Oregon SOS Daily Ballot Returns (past cycles via Internet Archive copies) | None | 2026 report not posted yet. No 2018 series. |
| PA Pennsylvania | PA Department of State mail-ballot datasets on data.pa.gov | None | Mail only (no in-person early voting). No 2018: no-excuse mail voting began with Act 77 (2019). |
| TX Texas | Texas SOS early-voting turnout reports (statewide from 2020; 30 largest counties for 2018) | None | No party registration. |
| VA Virginia | Virginia ELECT official results (used to group localities by lean) | † 2022: VPAP; 2024/2026: EPEC / Digital Poll Watchers. Both are built from ELECT's Daily Absentee List, which is sold rather than posted. | No party registration; no 2018 comparison (excuse required then). |
| WI Wisconsin | Wisconsin Elections Commission (law and reference) | † 2026: civicAPI (from WEC county reports) † 2022/2024: WEC daily files compiled by ElectIndex (spot-checked against WEC files) | WEC pages block automated downloads. No party registration; no 2018 series. |
Thanks
Thanks to @ne2earlyvote for offering their Nebraska early-vote data. Their public charts supply the Nebraska 2022 same-day comparison and NE-2 district totals, and are used to cross-check the daily civicAPI numbers. Their Nebraska tracker, built from the Secretary of State's official early-voting lists, is the source of the ballots-sent figures.
Corrections
If a number looks wrong, check the state's CSV and source link first. Corrections are made in the data files and show up in the next daily build.
